On March 21, 1962 under Project "Water Glass" the first operational deployment to Vietnam of F-102s took place and remained there under Project "Candy Machine". In March of 1962 F-102s of the 509th FIS were sent on Temporary Duty (TDY) to Tan Son Nhut Air Base near Saigon as well as from Da Nang, South Vietnam (at the time) and Don Muang (Thailand). In 1968 Da Nang was the busiest airport in the world with just under 2,600 daily air traffic operations. The Deuces (F-102) were used as interceptors, some escort duty, and even ground attack. In December of 1969 the F-102s were withdrawn from Vietnam and at that time had lost 15 aircraft to AAA, destroyed on the ground by the Viet Cong, small arms fire and operational accidents.
The F-102 was first flown on October 24, 1953. This aircraft was the USAF's first delta-wing fighter, and was also the USAF's first operational supersonic interceptor. Its primary mission was to intercept Soviet bombers, though it was also used as a bomber escort and ground attack aircraft during the Vietnam War. F-102s served with the USAF until the mid to late 1960s, when many of them were transferred to the US Air National Guard. By 1973, many F-102s were being used as target drones for testing the Patriot missile system, and the type was officially retired from service in 1976. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
Hobby Master's 1:72 scale F-102 Delta Dagger is a quality model with many fine features, skillfully designed and manufactured with modern techniques. The hinged canopy opens to reveal a pad-printed instrument panel and radar screen. The speed brake can be configured in the deployed position, and the landing gear and gear doors are constructed as subassemblies for quick and easy ground configuration. The solid metal wing is masterfully recreated with downturned leading edges, raised wingtips, razor thin wing fences and removable fuel tanks. The three segmented weapons bays are constructed as a one-piece subassembly, and the six Falcon missiles feature finely detailed trapeze mounts.
