The 40th FS “Fight’n Red Devils” arrived in Brisbane Australia on February 25, 1942 and were assigned to the 35th FG of the USAAF 5th Air Force. Lt. William McDonough was assigned P-39K-1 s/n 42-4358 and had an “Angelic Donald Duck” painted on the starboard side of the nose. It is referred to as “Angelic” because Donald is wearing an angel costume with his sleeves rolled up ready for a fight. When the war had ended Lt. McDonough had 5 victories. Designed as a single-engine high-altitude interceptor aircraft, the P-39 was first flown on April 6th, 1938. The main purpose of the engine configuration-placed behind the cockpit-was to free up space for the heavy main armament, a 37 mm cannon firing through the center of the propeller hub for optimum accuracy and stability. Unfortunately the Airacobra was vulnerable to any enemy fighter with decent high altitude performance, but its rear-mounted engine made it ideal for ground attack since return fire was less likely to hit the engine. The Airacobra saw combat throughout the world, particularly in the Pacific, Mediterranean and Russian theaters. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
