Among the 24 MiG-29s supplied to East Germany in 1988 were also four twin-seat MiG-29UBs. In contrast to the single-seaters three of the four trainers wore this two-tone grey camouflage. Following reunification with West Germany, "179black" received a new registration and saw use until 2004 as part of Fighter Wing 73 within the Federal German Air Force.

Designed to help the Soviet Union attain air superiority, the MiG-29 fighter was first flown on October 6th, 1977. The MiG-29, known as the "Fulcrum," has a high-mounted bubble canopy and twin jet engines with diagonal-shaped air intakes and large exhausts. Its tapered, swept-back wings and boom-mounted tail fins give it its classic look. Armed with medium and short-range missiles and unguided weapons for ground and sea-surface targets, the MiG-29's sight is a helmet-mounted system-the pilot chooses his targets by looking at them. Even today the Fulcrum remains a potent adversary, and will remain in service for at least another decade. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
Herpa's 1:72 scale MiG-29 is constructed almost entirely of diecast metal, with careful attention paid to even the smallest of details. This is a model with many movable parts, including a hinged canopy, deployable speed breaks and movable rudders with correctly replicated actuator mechanism. The landing gear is highly detailed, with rivets inside the gear doors, separately applied transparent landing lights, structural detail inside the wheel wells and a detailed splash fender. The auxiliary air inlet's louvers seamlessly blend with the upper fuselage. Fully armed with a 30mm cannon and three different missile types, this model is available as the single-seat A variant or two-seat B variant.
