A-10C 80-0275 was taken on charge in 1981 as an A-10A, converted to an OA-10A in 1987 and an A-10C in 2008. 80-0275 was assigned to the US Air Force A-10C Thunderbolt II Demonstration Team in May 2019 and spent August and September being repainted at Davis-Monthan AFB. The new paint scheme resembles a WWII-era P-51 Mustang and will be piloted by Major Cody "ShIV" Wilton, the Demo Team Commander. The team has received an FAA CAT II designation allowing the A-10C to fly within 1,000 feet from the crowd. Designed to counter criticism that the US Air Force wasn't serious enough about close air support, the A-10 Thunderbolt II was first flown on May 10, 1972. The Thunderbolt II is a single-seat attack aircraft used to protect ground forces from tanks, armored vehicles and other ground targets. Nicknamed "Warthog," the A-10 is highly maneuverable at low speeds and low altitude and is capable of short take-offs and landings. It is designed for easy maintenance-many of its parts are interchangeable between the right and left side and it can operate from bases with limited facilities. The A-10 is expected to remain in service until 2028 or beyond. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
