The Tupolev Tu-160 Blackjack is a supersonic, variable-sweep wing heavy strategic bomber and airborne missile platform designed by the Tupolev Design Bureau in the Soviet Union in the 1970s. While similar in appearance to the American B-1 Lancer, the Tu-160 is a different class of combat aircraft; its primary role being a standoff missile platform (strategic missile carrier). The Tu-160 is also larger and faster than the B-1B and has a slightly greater combat range. It is the largest and heaviest Mach 2+ supersonic military aircraft ever built and second to the experimental XB-70 Valkyrie in overall length and top speed. As of 2023, it is the largest and heaviest combat aircraft, the fastest bomber in use and the largest and heaviest variable-sweep wing airplane ever flown. Designed as a heavy low-level penetration bomber, the Tu-160 was first flown in 1981. It is one of the largest and heaviest combat aircraft in the world with a top speed exceeding Mach 2 and a range of around 7,500 miles. The aircraft is designed for strategic bombing missions and is capable of penetrating sophisticated air defense systems and delivering a variety of weapons, including nuclear and conventional cruise missiles, free-fall bombs, and precision-guided munitions. Despite its Cold War origins, the Tu-160 remains a formidable strategic bomber and is a key component of Russia's long-range strategic bomber fleet. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
