This latest production run of the "White Swan", as this elegant aircraft is called in Russia, is named for Ilya Muromets, the most famous of three knights-errant of Russian legends from medieval times. All 16 currently operational TU-160s are stationed at the Engels-2 air base. Next to an extensive modernization program for the only Mach 2-capable strategic bomber, production of new airframes has recently restarted. Designed as a heavy low-level penetration bomber, the Tu-160 was first flown in 1981. It is one of the largest and heaviest combat aircraft in the world with a top speed exceeding Mach 2 and a range of around 7,500 miles. The aircraft is designed for strategic bombing missions and is capable of penetrating sophisticated air defense systems and delivering a variety of weapons, including nuclear and conventional cruise missiles, free-fall bombs, and precision-guided munitions. Despite its Cold War origins, the Tu-160 remains a formidable strategic bomber and is a key component of Russia's long-range strategic bomber fleet. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
