As of May 2011, with this unusual and wholly solar energy powered airplane, the Swiss Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg plan to circle the globe in several legs without any polluting emissions at all. The purpose-built glider with a solar auxiliary drive has a wingspan of 80 meters, but weighs no more than two metric tons, including a two-man crew. Herpa was chosen by the initiators as the only manufacturer worldwide to produce a model of this extraordinary aircraft in the 1/200 scale. For the operators and sponsors, the model serves to promote this ambitious project, and will also be released across Herpa’s distribution network.
Designed as a long-range solar powered aircraft, the Solar Impulse was first flown on December 3rd, 2009. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
