Marine Fighting Squadron 451 (VMF-451) Blue Devils was activated on February 15th, 1944 at Marine Corps Air Station Mojave, California flying th F4U-1D Corsair. The squadron switched to the F6F-5 Hellcat in 1946 before entering the jet-age in 1951 with the F9F-2 Panther. In 1954, they upgraded to the FJ-2 Fury and adopted their new name, "Warlords". They flew the F-8U Crusader from 1960 before moving to the F-4J Phantom II in 1968, receiving the new designation, Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 451 (VMFA-451).
Designed as a fleet defense fighter for the US Navy, the F-4 Phantom was first flown on May 27, 1958. This twin-engine, long-range all-weather fighter/bomber proved highly adaptable and served in the Marine Corps and the US Air Force as well as in the Navy. During the Vietnam War, it was the principal air superiority fighter for the Navy and the Air Force and was also used for reconnaissance and ground attack. The Phantom continued to serve well into the 1970s and 1980s and even flew missions during the first Gulf War.
