In 1989 the Soviets revealed their new Sukhoi Su-27 at the Paris Airshow. Two variants of the aircraft were on display, Su-27 Flanker B Blue 388 and Su-27UB Blue 389. Blue 388 was given Sukhoi bureau number T10-41 but for the Paris show 41 was painted over with the new number 388. During the show test pilot Viktor Pugachev demonstrated a maneuver called the Cobra that later would be referred to as the Pugachev Cobra. The aircraft was capable of raising the nose 120 degrees and hovering in that upward position. Designed by the Soviet Union to challenge the superiority of fourth generation US fighters such as the F-15 Eagle, the Su-27 was first flown on May 20, 1977. This one seat Mach-2 fighter had the Soviet Union's first operational fly-by-wire system. The aircraft is very large compared to the MiG-29, its closest Soviet counterpart, but it is built with a high percentage of titanium, which helps minimize its weight. It is exceptionally agile and is perhaps most famous for its "Cobra" maneuver, which is a short, sustained level flight at a 120 degree angle of attack, often performed at air shows. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
