The USAF 445th Airlift Wing (AW), stationed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, operates the C-17A Globemaster III, a versatile transport aircraft designed for rapid strategic and tactical airlift. As an Air Force Reserve unit, the 445th AW plays a crucial role in global mobility by providing airlift and aeromedical evacuation capabilities. The C-17A can carry large payloads - up to 170,900 pounds - including troops, vehicles, and other heavy equipment. Known for its ability to operate on short, unpaved runways, the C-17A enhances the 445th's responsiveness, allowing them to support humanitarian, combat, and resupply missions worldwide with exceptional speed and efficiency.

McDonnell Douglas C-17A Globemaster III

Designed by McDonnell Douglas as a military transport aircraft, the C-17 Globemaster III was first flown on September 15, 1991. This enormous aircraft is used for strategic airlift of cargo and troops, and is capable of rapidly deploying and sustaining combat troops in potential battle areas. Among its many additional uses are medical evacuation, airdrop and tactical airlift. Powered by four reversible turbofan engines, the C-17 requires a crew of just three (a pilot, copilot and loadmaster). Its Maximum payload is 170,900 pounds and it is capable of carrying and dropping 102 paratroopers and their equipment.
