McDonnell Douglas MD-11F, registered N282UP, flies for UPS Airlines as part of the carrier's substantial fleet of MD-11 freighters supporting the company's global express cargo network from its Louisville, Kentucky superhub. UPS became a major MD-11 operator starting in 1991, eventually building one of the largest fleets of the type anywhere, alongside FedEx Express and Western Global Airlines as the three main remaining commercial operators of the trijet freighter. Following the fatal November 4, 2025, crash of UPS Flight 2976, an MD-11F that suffered a catastrophic mechanical failure on takeoff from Louisville, UPS immediately grounded its entire MD-11 fleet, which made up roughly 9 percent of the airline's total aircraft, before subsequently confirming the type's permanent retirement from UPS service.
