Lockheed L-188A Electra, operated by National Airlines as N5017K. The four-engine turboprop served the Florida-based carrier during the transition from piston-powered airliners to pure jets. Powered by four Allison 501-D13 engines, the Electra offered high cruising speed, excellent short-field performance, and a comfortable pressurized cabin. National used the type on domestic routes linking Florida with major cities elsewhere in the United States. Although Boeing 727s, Douglas DC-8s, and other jets soon displaced turboprops from frontline service, the Electra proved exceptionally durable and later enjoyed decades of cargo operation. Its design also formed the basis of Lockheed's successful P-3 Orion.
Please note: An optional display stand is available separately if you wish to display this model "in-flight".
Designed and built by Lockheed for American Airlines, the L-188 Electra first flew on December 6, 1957. The L-188 was the first turboprop airliner produced in the United States, with standard seating for 66 to 88 passengers. Powered by four Allison 501D-13 turboprops, the aircraft performed nearly as well as contemporary turbojets but cost less to operate. Unfortunately, two fatal accidents quickly eroded faith in the type and led to early cancelation of production. Electras were most infamously flown by the Argentine Navy, who used them to dispose of political prisoners over the Rio de La Plata. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
