Vickers VC10, operated by Gulf Air as A40-VI. The elegant British four-engine jet served the Gulf carrier during an important period of international expansion. With four Rolls-Royce Conway turbofans mounted at the rear of the fuselage, the VC10 was designed for excellent performance from hot, high, and relatively short runways, making it particularly well suited to Middle Eastern operations. Gulf Air used VC10s on routes linking Bahrain and other Gulf states with Europe, Asia, and regional destinations. The type's high tail, swept wings, and distinctive rear-engine arrangement made it one of the most recognizable long-haul airliners of the 1960s and 1970s.
Please note: An optional display stand is available separately if you wish to display this model "in-flight".
Designed to meet a need for a jet aircraft that could comfortably take off from and land on shorter runways, the Vickers VC10 was first flown on June 29, 1962. This long-range British airliner holds a long-standing record for the fastest Atlantic crossing by a sub-sonic airliner (only the supersonic Concorde has beaten its record). Advanced even for its time, the VC10 was designed with a quadruplicated automatic flight control system, which enabled fully automatic landings in zero-visibility conditions. Despite its promise, the VC10 only served as an airliner for 15 years; in the 1970s it was removed from service because of the high noise levels it produced on departure and approach. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
