Boeing 777-9, registered as ET-BBX, is part of Ethiopian Airlines' order for eight 777-9 aircraft announced in March 2024. This order made Ethiopian the first African airline to commit to the 777X program. ET-BBX features advanced technology, including composite wings and high-efficiency engines, offering lower fuel burn and reduced emissions compared to previous models. The aircraft is expected to expand Ethiopian's long-haul network, serving destinations across Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Americas. ET-BBX supports the airline's Vision 2035 strategy for fleet modernization and sustainable growth, reinforcing Ethiopian Airlines' position as a leading carrier on the continent.

Designed as a wide-bodied, twin-engined airliner to compete with the Airbus A330/A340 and the McDonnell Douglas MD-11, the 777 was first flown on June 12th, 1994. A pair of the world's largest diameter turbofan engines power the aircraft which currently holds the record for world's largest twin-engined airliner. The 777 was Boeing's first fly-by-wire airliner, featuring complete glass cockpit displays and flight envelope protection.
