Lockheed L-188A Electra Diecast Model
Eastern Air Lines, N5507

Lockheed L-188A Electra, operated by Eastern Air Lines as N5507. The four-engine turboprop joined Eastern during the transition from piston-powered airliners to the jet age and became a familiar sight on routes throughout the eastern United States. Powered by four Allison 501-D13 engines, the Electra offered high cruising speed, excellent short-field performance, and a comfortable pressurized cabin. Eastern used the type on high-frequency domestic services before Boeing 727s and other jets progressively replaced it. Although the Electra's major-airline passenger career was relatively short, its rugged airframe later proved exceptionally successful in cargo service and as the basis for the military P-3 Orion.

Please note: An optional display stand is available separately if you wish to display this model "in-flight".

Lockheed L-188A Electra

Designed and built by Lockheed for American Airlines, the L-188 Electra first flew on December 6, 1957. The L-188 was the first turboprop airliner produced in the United States, with standard seating for 66 to 88 passengers. Powered by four Allison 501D-13 turboprops, the aircraft performed nearly as well as contemporary turbojets but cost less to operate. Unfortunately, two fatal accidents quickly eroded faith in the type and led to early cancelation of production. Electras were most infamously flown by the Argentine Navy, who used them to dispose of political prisoners over the Rio de La Plata.
