Airbus A320-211, operated by Air Canada as C-FNVV. The aircraft belonged to the airline's long-serving A320 fleet and operated domestic, transborder, Caribbean, and other short and medium-haul routes. Powered by two CFM International CFM56 engines, the A320 brought modern fly-by-wire controls, cockpit commonality, and efficient twin-engine performance to Air Canada's narrowbody operation. Aircraft such as C-FNVV became familiar sights across Canada and the United States during decades of service. The original A320 fleet was progressively reduced as newer Boeing 737 MAX and Airbus A220 aircraft entered service, bringing improved fuel efficiency and updated passenger cabins.

Designed as a short/medium range narrow-body airliner to compete with the Boeing 737, the Airbus A320 was first flown on February 22nd, 1987. The A320 features side stick controllers and glass cockpit and was the world's first airliner to use use a digital fly-by-wire control system. Controversially, the software includes "flight envelope protection" to prevent the pilot from exceeding safe flight parameters. The highly successful design rapidly led to the development of the shortened-fuselage A318 and A319, and lengthened-fuselage A321 derivatives.
