NAMC YS-11, operated by Airborne Express as N913AX. The Japanese-built twin-engine turboprop found a productive second career carrying express freight after earlier passenger service. Powered by two Rolls-Royce Dart engines, the YS-11 offered rugged construction, good short-field performance, and economical operation on relatively short cargo sectors. Airborne Express used aircraft such as N913AX to feed parcels from smaller cities into its overnight sorting network, complementing larger jet freighters. The YS-11 was Japan's most important postwar commercial airliner and became a familiar regional aircraft across Asia and elsewhere before surviving in specialized cargo and government roles.
