Lockheed L-188A Electra, operated by American Airlines as N6118A. The four-engine turboprop joined American during the important transition between piston airliners and pure jets. Powered by four Allison 501-D13 engines, the Electra offered high cruising speed, a pressurized cabin, excellent short-field performance, and lower fuel consumption than early jets on shorter routes. American used its Electras on domestic services during the late 1950s and 1960s before Boeing 727s and other jets progressively replaced them. Although its frontline passenger career was relatively brief, the rugged Electra later became highly successful as a freighter and inspired the military P-3 Orion.

Please note: An optional display stand is available separately if you wish to display this model "in-flight".

Lockheed L-188A Electra

Designed and built by Lockheed for American Airlines, the L-188 Electra first flew on December 6, 1957. The L-188 was the first turboprop airliner produced in the United States, with standard seating for 66 to 88 passengers. Powered by four Allison 501D-13 turboprops, the aircraft performed nearly as well as contemporary turbojets but cost less to operate. Unfortunately, two fatal accidents quickly eroded faith in the type and led to early cancelation of production. Electras were most infamously flown by the Argentine Navy, who used them to dispose of political prisoners over the Rio de La Plata.
