RAF C-130J Super Hercules ZH886 was one of the early Hercules C4 aircraft delivered to the Royal Air Force as Britain introduced the new generation C-130J during the late 1990s. No. 206 Squadron operated the Hercules from RAF Lyneham as an operational evaluation unit, helping develop tactics and procedures for the new aircraft before frontline service expanded. ZH886 supported trials, training, tactical airlift, and evaluation activities. The C-130J introduced more powerful Rolls-Royce AE2100 engines, six bladed propellers, digital avionics, and improved performance compared with earlier Hercules variants, providing the RAF with greater range, efficiency, payload capability, and operational flexibility. Designed to function as a troop, medical evacuation and cargo transport aircraft, the C-130 Hercules was first flown on August 23rd, 1954. Built by Lockheed and capable of over 40,000 lbs of payload, this four-engine turboprop aircraft is quite possibly the most versatile tactical transport in existence. Its modern roles include airlift and airdrop, electronic surveillance, search and rescue, space-capsule recovery, helicopter refueling and aerial attack. Capable of takeoffs and landings from unprepared runways, the C-130 has even landed and taken off from a carrier deck without benefit of arresting gear or catapults. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
