The Douglas DC-3 was a cornerstone of early commercial aviation, symbolizing efficiency and reliability in the 1930s and 1940s. It carried 21-32 passengers, cruising at 180 mph with a range of 1,500 miles. Pan Am utilized the DC-3 for regional and international routes, enhancing connectivity across the Americas and the Caribbean. Its spacious cabin and smooth performance revolutionized air travel, making it more accessible and appealing. During World War II, many Pan Am DC-3s served as military C-47 Skytrains, solidifying their place as one of the most iconic aircraft in aviation history.
Designed to meet an American Airlines requirement for an enlarged version of the DC-2, the DC-3 was first flown on December 17th, 1935. Capable of carrying 24 passengers at a cruising speed of 180 mph, the DC-3's speed and long range revolutionized commercial air travel in the 1930s and 40s, when it carried 90 percent of the world's air travelers.
