Lockheed L-188A Electra, serial number 1057, operated by National Airlines as N5017K. The four-engine turboprop joined National during the transition from piston-powered airliners to pure jets and served domestic routes throughout the United States. Powered by four Allison 501-D13 engines, the Electra offered high cruising speed, a pressurized cabin, and strong short-field performance. National used the type on routes connecting Florida with major cities along the East Coast and elsewhere. Although passenger Electras were rapidly displaced by jets, the basic design proved exceptionally durable and later formed the basis of the Lockheed P-3 Orion maritime patrol aircraft.
Designed and built by Lockheed for American Airlines, the L-188 Electra first flew on December 6, 1957. The L-188 was the first turboprop airliner produced in the United States, with standard seating for 66 to 88 passengers. Powered by four Allison 501D-13 turboprops, the aircraft performed nearly as well as contemporary turbojets but cost less to operate. Unfortunately, two fatal accidents quickly eroded faith in the type and led to early cancelation of production. Electras were most infamously flown by the Argentine Navy, who used them to dispose of political prisoners over the Rio de La Plata. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
