McDonnell Douglas MD-11CF, serial number 48559, operated by Martinair as PH-MCS. The convertible freighter could be configured for passenger, cargo, or mixed operations, giving the Dutch carrier exceptional flexibility. Powered by three General Electric CF6-80C2 engines, PH-MCS combined intercontinental range with substantial payload capability and a large main-deck cargo door. Martinair used its MD-11s on long-haul leisure passenger services and worldwide freight routes before concentrating increasingly on cargo operations. The distinctive tri-jet became one of the airline's signature aircraft and continued serving as a freighter after many passenger MD-11s had disappeared from commercial service.
