ATR 42-500, serial number 457, operated by Cubana de Aviacion as CU-T1240. The twin-engine turboprop served domestic and regional routes from Cuba, connecting Havana with smaller cities and Caribbean destinations. Powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127 engines, the ATR 42 combines low fuel consumption with excellent short-field performance and is well suited to relatively short sectors. CU-T1240 provided Cubana with economical capacity for routes that did not require larger jet aircraft. ATR turboprops became useful components of the airline's mixed fleet, complementing Soviet-designed aircraft and larger Airbus and Ilyushin equipment on regional services.
