McDonnell Douglas MD-81, serial number 48004, operated by Continental Airlines as N859HA. The aircraft was part of the MD-80 generation developed from the successful DC-9 and provided greater passenger capacity, range, and improved economics. Powered by two Pratt & Whitney JT8D-200 series engines, N859HA served domestic routes during Continental's extensive use of McDonnell Douglas narrowbody aircraft. The MD-81 featured the family's characteristic rear-mounted engines, T-tail, and long, slender fuselage. Continental eventually standardized around newer Boeing narrowbodies, while many MD-80 aircraft continued long careers with other airlines and charter operators around the world.
Designed as a stretched and modified DC-9, the MD-80 was first flown on October 18th, 1979. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
Gemini's 1:200 scale DC-9 series jetliners have a higher metal content than almost any other 1:200 model. The fuselage features a solid all around seamless construction with pad-printed windows and doors, fine photo-etched antennas and glimmering jewel-cut anti-collision lenses on top and bottom. The solid metal wings feature subtle panel lines and integrated flap track fairings on the underside. The aft fuselage features all-metal tail surfaces and rear mounted engine nacelles with turbo fan details inside. The series covers the early DC-9s and the updated MD-80/90 Series with stretched fuselages and larger wings.
