RCAF CC-130H Hercules 130333, construction number 4574, entered Canadian service in March 1975. The aircraft served with units including 435 and 436 Squadrons and performed transport, search and rescue, and support missions during its lengthy career. In January 1978, 130333 participated in Operation Morning Light, the search for radioactive debris from the crashed Soviet Cosmos 954 satellite across Canada's Northwest Territories. It later supported United Nations operations in Ethiopia during 1991. The rugged Hercules was ideally suited to Canada's demanding operating environment, combining long range, substantial payload capacity, and the ability to operate from short and relatively austere airfields. Designed to function as a troop, medical evacuation and cargo transport aircraft, the C-130 Hercules was first flown on August 23rd, 1954. Built by Lockheed and capable of over 40,000 lbs of payload, this four-engine turboprop aircraft is quite possibly the most versatile tactical transport in existence. Its modern roles include airlift and airdrop, electronic surveillance, search and rescue, space-capsule recovery, helicopter refueling and aerial attack.
