Designed as a short/medium range narrow-body airliner to compete with the Boeing 737, the Airbus A320 was first flown on February 22nd, 1987. The A320 features side stick controllers and glass cockpit and was the world's first airliner to use use a digital fly-by-wire control system. Controversially, the software includes "flight envelope protection" to prevent the pilot from exceeding safe flight parameters. The highly successful design rapidly led to the development of the shortened-fuselage A318 and A319, and lengthened-fuselage A321 derivatives. The seamlessly constructed fuselage features fine photo-etched metal antennas, jewel cut anti-collision lenses and pad-printed windows and doors that do not interrupt the lines of the aircraft. The series covers the original A320 fuselage, the stretched A321 variant and the shorter A319.
