The 439th Airlift Wing (AW), based at Westover Air Reserve Base (ARB), Massachusetts, operates the Lockheed C-5M Super Galaxy, one of the largest military transport aircraft in the world. As an Air Force Reserve unit, the 439th AW provides strategic airlift capabilities, transporting oversized cargo, personnel, and equipment globally. The C-5M features upgraded avionics, new engines, and enhanced reliability, allowing for extended range and fuel efficiency. Westover ARB, the largest Air Force Reserve base in the U.S., plays a crucial role in supporting military and humanitarian missions worldwide, ensuring rapid global mobility for the U.S. Air Force. Designed to meet a USAF requirement for a heavy logistics transport, the C-5 was first flown on June 30th, 1968. The t-tail configuration provides unobstructed access to the large rear loading ramp which, in combination with the massive hinged nose, allows for "drive-through" loading and unloading of cargo. The C-5 is one of the largest military aircraft ever built and its cavernous cargo compartment measures 121 feet long by 19 feet wide and 13.5 feet high. This is in addition to an upper deck with seating for 73 passengers. Current versions of the aircraft are capable of lifting up to 270,000 lbs of cargo. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
