The USAF 433rd Airlift Wing (AW), based at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in Texas, operates the C-5M Super Galaxy, one of the largest military transport aircraft in the world. Known as the "Alamo Wing," the 433rd AW is an Air Force Reserve unit specializing in rapid global mobility and strategic airlift. The C-5M, a modernized version of the original C-5 Galaxy, can carry up to 281,000 pounds of cargo, including oversized equipment, helicopters, and even small aircraft. With upgraded avionics, engines, and reliability, the C-5M enables the 433rd to perform critical missions supporting U.S. and allied forces worldwide.

Lockheed C-5M Super Galaxy

Designed to meet a USAF requirement for a heavy logistics transport, the C-5 was first flown on June 30th, 1968. The t-tail configuration provides unobstructed access to the large rear loading ramp which, in combination with the massive hinged nose, allows for "drive-through" loading and unloading of cargo. The C-5 is one of the largest military aircraft ever built and its cavernous cargo compartment measures 121 feet long by 19 feet wide and 13.5 feet high. This is in addition to an upper deck with seating for 73 passengers. Current versions of the aircraft are capable of lifting up to 270,000 lbs of cargo.
