Airbus A320-214, serial number 4821, operated by Avianca as N821AV. Built at Toulouse in 2011 under test registration F-WWIF, the aircraft was delivered to Avianca that September and ferried to Bogota in early October. Originally configured with 12 business and 138 economy seats, it was reconfigured to 12 business and 168 economy seats in 2022. In November 2022, N821AV received a special retro livery honoring LACSA, the historic Costa Rican airline that became part of the Avianca group. The aircraft remains active in 2026 on Avianca services throughout the Americas.
Designed as a short/medium range narrow-body airliner to compete with the Boeing 737, the Airbus A320 was first flown on February 22nd, 1987. The A320 features side stick controllers and glass cockpit and was the world's first airliner to use use a digital fly-by-wire control system. Controversially, the software includes "flight envelope protection" to prevent the pilot from exceeding safe flight parameters. The highly successful design rapidly led to the development of the shortened-fuselage A318 and A319, and lengthened-fuselage A321 derivatives.
