Lockheed L-188A Electra, serial number 1053, operated by TAME Ecuador as HC-AZY and named "Galapagos." Originally delivered to Braniff International Airways as N9702C in May 1959, it was acquired by TAME in May 1975 and also carried Ecuadorian military identity FAE-1052. HC-AZY became one of TAME's last Electras and by 1988 was operating the Quito-Tulcan route. On September 12, 1988, the aircraft attempted a three-engine ferry takeoff from Lago Agrio after its No. 1 engine had been shut down. It crashed shortly after takeoff, killing all seven occupants and ending the aircraft's 29-year career.
Designed and built by Lockheed for American Airlines, the L-188 Electra first flew on December 6, 1957. The L-188 was the first turboprop airliner produced in the United States, with standard seating for 66 to 88 passengers. Powered by four Allison 501D-13 turboprops, the aircraft performed nearly as well as contemporary turbojets but cost less to operate. Unfortunately, two fatal accidents quickly eroded faith in the type and led to early cancelation of production.
