The MiG-15bis flew for the Iraqi Air Force following the 14 July 1958 revolution, which toppled the British-imposed Hashemite monarchy and severed Iraq's ties to London. The new revolutionary government pivoted sharply toward Moscow, and Iraq received roughly 20 MiG-15bis fighters, 30 MiG-15UTI trainers, and 20 MiG-17Fs from the Soviet Union in 1958-59, ending Iraq's decades-long reliance on British aircraft. This marked the beginning of the Iraqi Air Force's long dependence on Soviet equipment, which would soon include the MiG-19 and MiG-21, making Iraq the first Arab air force to operate both types during the following decade.
Designed to meet a Soviet Air Force requirement for a high-performance jet fighter, the MiG-15 was first flown on December 30, 1947. The MiG-15 was used by several communist nations-including the USSR and North Korea-and was one of the first truly successful swept-wing fighters. It could shoot down heavy bombers and could climb faster and higher than its American rival, the F-86. Fortunately for the F-86, it also turned poorly and had high mach instability, which limited it as a dogfighter.
