The French Air Force (Armee de l'Air) operated the F-84G Thunderjet beginning in the early 1950s. As part of a military assistance program, France received numerous F-84Gs to modernize its post-WWII air force. The F-84G, powered by the Allison J35-A-29 engine, offered a top speed of 622 mph and was utilized primarily for ground-attack and tactical bombing missions. The aircraft's durability and versatility proved beneficial for France, enhancing its capabilities during the early Cold War period. The F-84G played a crucial role in transitioning the Armee de l'Air into the jet age, contributing significantly to NATO's collective defense strategy.
Designed to meet a US Army requirement for a turbojet "day fighter," the F-84 first flew on February 28, 1946. Early models suffered from so many structural and engine problems that the Air Force considered scrapping the F-84 project in 1948, but designers rallied and by 1949 the F-84D was fully operational and free from most of its earlier problems. The aircraft became the Air Force's primary strike aircraft during the Korean War, and could claim several firsts, including the first fighter capable of carrying a nuclear weapon and the first to use in-flight refueling. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
