The USAF Thunderbirds flew the F-84G Thunderjet from 1953 to 1954. The F-84G was a straight-wing jet powered by an Allison J35-A-29 engine, capable of speeds up to 622 mph. Known for its distinctive straight wings and tip tanks, the F-84G was a robust and reliable aircraft that showcased the Thunderbirds' precision aerobatics. Its performances helped solidify the Thunderbirds' reputation as one of the premier aerial demonstration teams in the world, thrilling audiences with intricate maneuvers and tight formations, laying the groundwork for the team's future success with more advanced aircraft.
Designed to meet a US Army requirement for a turbojet "day fighter," the F-84 first flew on February 28, 1946. Early models suffered from so many structural and engine problems that the Air Force considered scrapping the F-84 project in 1948, but designers rallied and by 1949 the F-84D was fully operational and free from most of its earlier problems.
