The Sd.Kfz. 251 (Sonderkraftfahrzeug 251) half-track was a World War II German armored personnel carrier designed by the Hanomag company. It was the most widely produced German half-track of the war, with at least 15,252 vehicles and variants produced by seven manufacturers. The Sd.Kfz.251/22 "7.5 cm PaK40 L/46 auf mittlerem Schutzenpanzerwagen" was fitted with a 75 mm PaK 40 anti-tank gun. Probably too big a gun for the carriage and overloaded but effective, the Yugoslav military was still using captured examples into the 1950s.
Designed to meet a need for a vehicle that could safely transport infantry to the battlefield, the Sd.Kfz. 251 served Germany from 1939 to 1945. This half-track had a large track area and characteristic "slack track" design, with overlapping/interleaved main road wheels. It had an open top, which left the crew vulnerable to high explosive rounds and aircraft attack, but for practical purposes the design was so successful that it was produced in four models with no fewer than 23 variants. The "Hanomag" proved to be one of the most reliable half-tracks of the war and a total of 15,252 were built. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
