Dragon Models 1:72 Armor Collector Series 60460
Sd.Kfz.181 Sturmtiger Display Model
German Army, Germany, 1945

1:72 Scale   Length   Width
Sd.Kfz.181 Sturmtiger   3.5"   2"

Need a house demolished? Look no further than the German Sturmtiger! There's nothing gentle about this vehicle also known as the 38cm RW61 auf Sturmmorser Tiger, for its huge 38cm mortar mounted on a robust Tiger I chassis was designed to destroy buildings and strong-points. Interestingly, the mortar fired rocket-assisted ammunition, with vents in the wall of the gun tube designed to exhaust the gases forward. The 38cm weapon had a creditable maximum range of 4,600m. The turret was replaced with a fixed casemate, and the whole vehicle weighed 65 tons.

Only 18 such Sturmtiger vehicles were converted by Alkett at its Berlin-Spandau plant from August to December 1944. They were mainly used in the defense of Germany, and this is the case with the subject of Dragon Armor's latest release. It's been some time since Dragon Armor released a 1/72 scale Sturmtiger, and they've all well and truly disappeared from shop shelves…But now they're back! This Sturmtiger model is from an unidentified unit fighting in the Fatherland in 1945, and it has an all-new camouflage scheme of mottled green over a sand-yellow base. The expertly painted and weathered model is fully detailed, and with its large-caliber gun, it's bound to score a big hit with collectors!

Sd.Kfz.181 Sturmtiger

Production of the Tiger began in August 1942, and by August 1944 1,355 of these tanks had been built. The 88mm main gun was the most powerful anti-tank gun in use by any army. The superior mobility of Allied tanks allowed them to attack from behind or from the side in the hope of taking a Tiger down. The influence of Tiger tanks on allied morale grew to almost mythical proportions, and was known as "Tigerphobia." Tigers destroyed tremendous amounts of enemy equipment and often just the sight of a Tiger would induce the Russian tankers to withdraw.

Dragon's 1:72 scale Sturmtiger Tank is constructed almost entirely from plastic, which allows for the greatest possible detail. Close scrutiny of this model reveals a simulated Zimmerit coating, engine exhaust stacks with heat shields, weathered rubber tracks, separately-applied track repair equipment and individually visible nuts and bolts on the interleaved road wheels. The gun casement's thick plates of interlocking armor are accurately rendered, and the individual shafts of the exhaust gas ring are visible inside the pivoting 380mm rocket launcher. The driver's slotted window, defensive 7.92mm machine gun and headlight are clearly seen, and a loading crane with hand-operated crank is mounted to the rear of the superstructure.
