When a 150mm sFH18/1 L/30 howitzer was combined with a Panzer IV chassis and hull, the resulting hybrid was a vehicle christened the "Hummel" (German for Bumble Bee). The purpose of this combination was to give armoured units much needed mobile artillery support.
The Hummel, or, "Bumblebee", was a self-propelled artillery gun based on the used by the Germans in WWII. The Hummel was lightly armoured and had a main armament of the 105mm leFH 18 howitzer mounted on the Panzer III/IV chassis, with a light superstructure to offer the crew some protection. Production began for the Hummel in 1943 out of the need for mobile artillery support and served in battles such as Kursk. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
Dragon's 1:72 scale Hummel is constructed almost entirely from plastic for the greatest possible detail, with a discreet, internally-mounted weight to give the model its heft. The large open-top fighting compartment provides a complete unobstructed view of the 15mm howitzer cannon's breach system, featuring visible dial and levered hand-cranks. The interior is lined with equipment and storage boxes full of crew machine guns and individual shells, and the exterior features separately attached spare track, jack and road wheels. The howitzer cannon and attached arched shield elevate and pivot. Maintenance hatches and the vehicle's leaf-spring suspension and riveted construction can be clearly seen on the model's underside.
