Production of the Tiger began in August 1942, and by August 1944 1,355 of these tanks had been built. The 88mm main gun was the most powerful anti-tank gun in use by any army. The superior mobility of Allied tanks allowed them to attack from behind or from the side in the hope of taking a Tiger down. The influence of Tiger tanks on allied morale grew to almost mythical proportions, and was known as "Tigerphobia." Dragon's 1:72 scale Sturmtiger is constructed almost entirely from plastic, which allows for the greatest possible detail. Close scrutiny of this model reveals a simulated Zimmerit coating, engine exhaust stacks with heat shields, weathered rubber tracks, separately-applied track repair equipment and individually visible nuts and bolts on the interleaved road wheels. The gun casement's thick plates of interlocking armor are accurately rendered, and the individual shafts of the exhaust gas ring are visible inside the pivoting 380mm rocket launcher. The driver's slotted window, defensive 7.92mm machine gun and headlight are clearly seen, and a loading crane with hand-operated crank is mounted to the rear of the superstructure.
