The Leopard 2 is a main battle tank developed by Krauss-Maffei AG, now Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW), of Munchen, Germany. It is widely recognized as one of the most advanced MBTs in the world. While the A5 comprises the backbone of Germany's tank forces, it is also used in The Netherlands and Sweden. The first Leopard 2 A5 were officially delivered to the German Army School on 30 November 1995. The most significant change to the hull of the Leopard 2 A5 is the new driver's hatch, which is now electronically operated and slides to the right to open. Other improvements for the A5 include steel road wheels, upgraded armor and GPS capabilities.

Dragon's 1:72 scale Leopard Tank has the attractive sleek low-profile of today's modern tanks. The 360 degree rotating turret features an elevating cannon with muzzle reference sensor, side mounted smoke mortars and a removable 7.62 machine. Details of the fire control system such as PERI R17 periscope on top and the guns EMES 15 main gun sight up front are accurately recreated. The hull has separately applied spare track up front and finely cast engine intake and exhaust vents at the rear. Each of the 14 road wheels includes bolt head details that can clearly be seen through the vehicle's tracks, while torsion bar suspension is reproduced on the model's underside
