Please note:The F-117 model in this set does not come with landing gear and cannot be displayed on the stand! Designed to meet a need for a heavy bomber capable of penetrating sophisticated anti aircraft defenses, the Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit first flew on July 17, 1989. This aircraft uses "low observable" stealth technology and is capable of delivering both conventional and nuclear weapons. Though designed for Cold War applications, it has seen modern use in Serbia, Iraq and Afghanistan. At $737 million each (in 1997 dollars), the first B-2s were a notoriously expensive aircraft, and only a fraction of the initial 132 aircraft that Congress planned to purchase were eventually obtained. Today, just 20 of these aircraft are flown by the USAF. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc. Designed and developed by Lockheed, the F-117 was the first operational aircraft conceived with stealth technology. It first flew on June 18, 1981, but was not officially acknowledged until 1988, when the Pentagon released a grainy, unrevealing photograph to the media (the aircraft itself was not seen by the public until 1990). With no afterburners and a shape designed to deflect radar signals, the F-117 is subsonic but effective. It has an automated planning system, sophisticated navigation and infrared target acquisition. It has been used several times in combat, most notably during the Persian Gulf War. It was retired in 2008, replaced by the more formidable F-22. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
