Dragon Models Aerospace Program 50390
McDonnell Gemini Spacecraft Diecast Model
NASA, Project Gemini, w/Spacewalker

1:72 Scale   Length   Width
McDonnell Gemini Spacecraft   3.25"   1.75"

Project Gemini encompassed two unmanned and ten manned spaceflights from 1964-66. The NASA program was designed to develop space travel techniques with a view to putting man on the Moon under the subsequent Apollo project. One of the highlights of Gemini IV was the first American spacewalk, which occurred on 3 June 1965. On that occasion the astronaut performed the first ever extravehicular activity (EVA) lasting 23 minutes. All ten Gemini missions blasted off aboard Titan II rocket systems from Cape Canaveral in Florida.

This model commemorates these groundbreaking Gemini spaceflights. The model includes a Gemini spacecraft as well as a spacewalking astronaut. The capsule could carry two astronauts, and indeed this model boasts two crewmen. The craft is based on the Gemini craft previously released (Item No.50385) but it features special modifications. The hatch is shown open, allowing a good view of the interior of the cramped spacecraft. The two astronauts are extremely well sculpted in this scale – one is performing a spacewalk whilst tied to his 8m-long tether, and the other is monitoring proceedings from inside the capsule. Such a legendary scene has been captured poignantly in this fine new model!

McDonnell Gemini Spacecraft

Built for NASA by McDonnell Aircraft, the Gemini spacecraft was first launched on March 23rd, 1965. Designed to further pave the way to a moon landing mission, Gemini was larger, heavier and considerably more sophisticated than the preceeding Mercury design. Launched atop a Titan II launch vehicle, the spacecraft comprised a two-man capsule and detachable (for re-entry) equipment module. It included ejection seats, radar and an onboard guidance computer. Gemini was also fully maneuverable enabling NASA to perfect orbital changes as well as rendezvous and docking maneuvers that were critical to the subsequent Apollo program.

Dragon's 1:72 scale Gemini Spacecraft is constructed entirely of plastic with an internal metal weight to enhance overall feel. The model is comprised of the space capsule with an accurately simulated corrugated look and feel and the equipment module fixed to the rear with numerous orbital control thruster ports. The capsule features simulated windows surrounded by red ejection seat demarcation lines and fitted with a separately applied communication antenna. The equipment module features fine panel line details and the wrinkled finish of simulated thermal insulation sheets. The model mounts to an elegant display stand to portray the spacecraft as it would appear in earth orbit.
