Dragon Warbirds has released a further Ju 87D-5 in its collectibles range. This time the model depicts a Stuka from 1./ SG2 "Immelmann", a famous squadron of the Luftwaffe. The squadron was named after Max Immelmann, the first German pilot to earn the Pour le Mérite (which was later known as The Blue Max in his honor) after destroying eight enemy aircraft in WWI. He was killed in action in June 1916 with 15 aerial victories to his credit, though the "Immelmann" Squadron was to keep his name alive. This close-support Stuka group (Schlachtgeschwader 2) fought principally in the southern sector of the Eastern Front in places like Stalingrad and the Caucasus.
This model is superbly crafted, with exquisite detail incorporated such as the munitions loaded under the wings. The model has the wing-mounted 20mm MG 151 cannons introduced on the D-5 model, as well as the dual-barrel machine gun in the rear cockpit. It has received a special paint finish, with a pattern of white "splotches" applied over the underlying green camouflage. This is because the model represents a Stuka flying in the winter of 1943-44. With its winter camouflage scheme, this Ju 87D-5 scale replica might merge well into its snowy surroundings, but it will positively stand out in any model aircraft collection!
Designed to function as a close support aircraft, the Ju 87 was first flown on September 17th, 1935. The Ju 87 had an innovative design that included automatic dive brakes under each wing-a feature that protected against the consequences of pilot blackout by ensuring recovery from an attack dive. Crewed by a pilot and rear gunner, the Ju 87 had twin 37mm cannons and a bomb that swung away from the propeller on an elongated U-shaped crutch. Its inverted gull wings improved pilot-to-ground visibility, gave the undercarriage a shorter height and made the Ju 87 instantly recognizable to its enemies. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
