The federal mission of the 138th Fighter Wing is to maintain combat forces ready for mobilization, deployment and employment as needed to support national security objectives. After conversion to the F-16, the 138th Fighter Wing has participated in both Operation Provide Comfort and Operation Northern Watch enforcing the No-Fly Zone in Northern Iraq. The 138th Fighter Wing also deployed to Turkey in 1996 in support of Operation Northern Watch.
Designed by General Dynamics as a lightweight, daytime USAF air-combat fighter, the F-16 was first flown on January 20th, 1974. This single-engine, supersonic aircraft has, over the years, evolved into a multirole aircraft. It has a frameless bubble canopy-giving its pilot superior visibility-and it uses advanced aerodynamics. The F-16 was one of the first designs to use a relaxed static stability/fly-by-wire system, which helps it pull 9-g maneuvers and achieve speeds of more than Mach 2. All feature accurately researched exterior markings and placards which are applied using a state-of-the-art pad printing process so they will not fade or peel like decals. The canopy can optionally be displayed in an opened position, revealing a detailed cockpit interior. The authentic ordnance loads can be attached at different wing stations and the speedbrakes can be shown opened or closed, inside the all-moving horizontal stabilizer surfaces. Finally, the model may be shown "in flight" on its display stand, or firmly on the ground when the metal landing gear is attached. Die-hard F-16 fans will be impressed with the attention to detail shown in the construction of this model.
