The Soviet SU-122 was a self-propelled gun developed during World War II by mounting a 122mm M-30 howitzer on the chassis of the widely produced T-34 tank. Entering service in late 1942, the SU-122 was designed to provide mobile artillery support for advancing armored units. Its powerful high-explosive shells were highly effective against enemy fortifications, infantry positions, and lightly armored vehicles. Although not intended as a dedicated tank destroyer, it could engage German armor when necessary. Approximately 638 examples were built before production ended in 1944, when more specialized Soviet assault guns entered service.
