The A-6 Intruder is a twin-engine, mid-wing attack aircraft built by Grumman Aerospace. In service between 1963 and 1997, the Intruder was designed as a replacement for the piston-engined A-1 Skyraider.
Designed to meet a US Navy requirement for an all-weather carrier-based attack/strike aircraft, the A-6 Intruder was first flown on April 19th, 1960. The A-6 was equipped with a CRT that allowed for low-level flight in all weather conditions, a characteristic that helped it remain the US Navy and US Marine Corps' principle night and all-weather attack aircraft through the 1990s. With its large, blunt nose and lean tail, the A-6 was given a variety of unflattering nicknames, including "Double Ugly" and the "Drumstick." Century Wings' 1:144 scale A-6 Intruders are constructed almost entirely of diecast metal, a feature uncommon in this scale. Each model's wings are wonderfully sculpted and include raised wing fences and hinge details. The canopy has forward tinting and is removable for easy viewing of the cockpit interior. The thin metal horizontal stabilizers rotate freely in unison, and there is a full complement of detailed weapons ordnance on the underside. Models in this series feature landing gear and doors fixed in the down position for easy display.
