Boeing 767-2B7ER, serial number 25225, line number 375, originally delivered to USAir on June 20, 1991 as N654US. British Airways leased the aircraft from USAir beginning May 21, 1993, making it one of the unusual U.S.-registered 767-200ERs to wear full British Airways colors. It returned to USAir in June 1996 and subsequently became part of US Airways. On September 25, 2000, N654US suffered an uncontained No. 1 engine failure and fire during a high-power ground run at Philadelphia. The aircraft was damaged beyond repair and subsequently broken up.
Designed as a wide-bodied, twin-engined airliner to fill the niche between the narrow-bodied 707 and wide-bodied 747, the 767 was first flown on September 26th, 1981. Developed in tandem with the narrow-bodied 757 twinjet, both aircraft share a common digital cockpit layout and are operated by a two man flight crew. Thanks to a proven reliability track-record, the 767 is approved for extended twin engine operations (ETOPS) making it a popular choice for airlines flying transatlantic routes.
