The Avenger ADA System was designed for low-altitude air defense for brigade, battalion or smaller field tactical units. Mounted on the all-purpose HMMWV chassis, the Avenger has the ability to accompany most combat infantry, mechanized infantry and armor units into combat areas. A Battery, 3-4 ADAH was the second such air defense artillery battery to deploy to Afghanistan in December 2002-January 2003.
In 1981 the US government awarded AM General the contract for 55,000 HMMWVs. This High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV or Humvee) has assumed the military role previously filled by Jeep and is produced in several configurations: command and control systems, field ambulance, ammunition and troop and general cargo transport. Optional equipment includes a winch and supplemental armor. Variant armament carriers provide mounting and firing capabilities for heavy machine guns.
