The Sd.Kfz.161, more commonly referred to as the Panzer IV, was the most widely produced German tank of WWII, with 8,500 produced from 1936-45. Over 6,000 examples of Panzerkampfwagen IV tanks were produced between 1943 and 1945. Armed with a short-barrel 75mm gun and driven by a 250-horsepower engine, the Panzer IV quickly became the workhorse of Panzer Divisions. After the appearance of the Russian T-34-with its dominant guns and heavier, sloped armor-the Panzer needed design modifications such as thick side and turret skirts, a new gun (the KwK 40 75mm L/48) and a larger turret. With these upgrades, the Panzer IV proved equal to the Soviet T-34 and was also effective against British tanks and American M-4 Sherman Medium Tanks. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
