Douglas DC-8-62, serial number 45913, operated by Swissair as HB-IDG. The aircraft joined the Swiss flag carrier's long haul fleet during the jet age and operated intercontinental services from Zurich to destinations throughout North America, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. Powered by four Pratt & Whitney JT3D turbofan engines, the stretched DC-8-62 combined increased passenger capacity with excellent range and became particularly popular with international airlines. HB-IDG served during a period when Swissair built a reputation for precision and high-quality service. The DC-8 fleet was eventually replaced by newer widebody aircraft including the McDonnell Douglas DC-10 and Airbus A310.
