Boeing 777-346, serial number 27653, operated by Japan Airlines as JA751J. The aircraft joined JAL's domestic 777-300 fleet for high-density trunk routes within Japan. Powered by two Pratt & Whitney PW4000 engines, JA751J offered the passenger capacity required for exceptionally busy short sectors while delivering the reliability and efficiency of a twin-engine widebody. The aircraft regularly served routes linking Tokyo Haneda with major cities such as Sapporo, Fukuoka, and Okinawa. JAL's non-ER 777-300 fleet became an important replacement for domestic Boeing 747s before being progressively retired as the airline introduced newer Airbus A350-900 aircraft for the same demanding market. Designed as a wide-bodied, twin-engined airliner to compete with the Airbus A330/A340 and the McDonnell Douglas MD-11, the 777 was first flown on June 12th, 1994. A pair of the world's largest diameter turbofan engines power the aircraft which currently holds the record for world's largest twin-engined airliner. The 777 was Boeing's first fly-by-wire airliner, featuring complete glass cockpit displays and flight envelope protection.
