Airbus A330-343, serial number 1195, operated by Virgin Atlantic Airways as G-VKSS. The aircraft joined Virgin Atlantic's long haul fleet for services from the United Kingdom to destinations across North America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia. Powered by two Rolls-Royce Trent 700 engines, G-VKSS combined useful intercontinental range with a comfortable widebody cabin and substantial belly-cargo capacity. Virgin Atlantic's A330-300s served alongside Boeing 747s, Airbus A340s, and later Boeing 787 and Airbus A350 aircraft. The type provided efficient twin-engine capacity during an important period of fleet modernization before newer A330neo and A350 aircraft assumed an increasing share of the airline's long haul network.
Designed as a wide-bodied, long-haul passenger transport to compete with the Boeing 767, the A330 was first flown on November 2nd, 1992. It was designed as a lengthened version of the A300 and was developed in parallel with the larger, four-engined A340, enabling many of the components to be shared between the three types. The A330 also uses the same fly-by-wire technology that was introduced with the A320, featuring a glass cockpit and side-stick controllers. The A330 has the same range and payload capacity as a DC-10 with 25% greater fuel efficiency. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
